Loy Kratong is my favorite ceremony, its rich in Thai tradition, and is a very beautiful and spiritual festival to the Thai people including myself. It is believed that Loy Kratong first celebrated in the 13th century in the ancient
The Loy Kratong occurs on the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month, which is usually falls in November and it will be celebrated nationwide in
The word “Loy” means to float and “Kratong” means the lotus-shaped banana leaf cup. But nowadays it’s more creative making the Kratong, so you can use anything like coconut shells or any materials available. Each Kratong usually contains flowers, joss sticks, candle, and coins.
In many communities people will have big ceremony and have Loy Kratong Beauty Queen or “Nang Noppamart”.
On that day thousands of people will gather at the canals or rivers banks with the kratong in their hands. They will light the candles and put the coins in the their kratong, then silently make a wish and put the kratong carefully in the water while pushing it away along the current. A couple making a wish and floating a kratong together are believed will stay together in the future and next life.
Where to get/buy a Kratong?
Many people would make Kratong and sell on the streets usually where the ceremony occurs and it only costs about 40-50 baht, also many hotels would offers a romantic dinner for couples and each couple will get Kratong.
Where to celebrate?
If you are in Phuket, you can celebrate on any beaches on the island or at Sapan HIn in Phuket town, or where there are rivers, canals or sources of water. The purpose of the ceremony is to say the apologies to the River Goddess or “Pra Mae Kong Kha” and it is intended to float away your sin or bad thing in your life and wishing for a better future.
When it happens?
The ceremony occurs in the evening from around 8-9 pm till late.
Loy Krathong Song
English Version
November’s full moon shines,
Loy Krathong, Loy Krathong,
And the water’s high,
In the golden river and the canal.
Loy Loy Krathong
Loy Loy Krathong
Loy Krathong is here
And everybody’s full of cheer.
We’re together at the canal
Everyone with his Krathong,
As we push away, we pray,
We can see a better day.
